Why Tanzania for a safari

Tanzania protects a larger share of its land for wildlife than almost any other country in Africa. National parks, conservation areas and game reserves cover a large part of the country, from the open plains of the Serengeti to the forests and lakes of the Rift Valley. Much of this land is managed for wildlife and for the communities who live alongside it, and the parks are large enough for animals to follow the seasons as they always have. For visitors it means wide, open landscapes where you can drive for an hour and still see more wildlife than vehicles, and where every day of a safari feels different from the one before.

The result is variety. In one trip you can watch lions on the short-grass plains, drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater, see elephants gather under baobab trees in Tarangire and finish on a white-sand beach in Zanzibar, all without long international connections in between. Because the main parks are close together, you spend more of each day watching animals and less of it travelling. A typical trip moves from dry savannah to volcanic highlands, from forest to lakeshore, in just a few days, and you can match the pace to what you enjoy most, whether that is photography, birds, big cats or simply quiet time in the bush.

The northern safari circuit

Most first safaris follow the northern circuit, a loop that starts in Arusha and links Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Distances are manageable by road, the landscapes change every day, and the wildlife is excellent all year. Arusha is the natural base: most international flights to the north land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, about an hour away, and the drive to the first park takes only a couple of hours. Roads between the parks are a mix of tarmac and gravel, and the time on the road becomes part of the safari, with villages, markets and views of the Rift Valley along the way.

A classic route spends one day each in Tarangire and Lake Manyara, a day in the Ngorongoro Crater and two or three days in the Serengeti. Longer trips add more time where the herds are, or a few nights in a quieter area away from the main roads. Where the herds are depends on the month, so we plan the Serengeti part of the trip around the season. Adding a night in the north of the park in the dry season, or in the south during the calving months, often makes the biggest difference to what you see, and quieter areas reward guests who want to spend long stretches with one sighting.

Planning your trip with us

Every trip we arrange is planned around the people travelling. Tell us your dates, who is coming, the style of accommodation you like and what you most want to see, and your consultant suggests a route and sends a written quote. There is no standard package to fit into. If you prefer a slower pace, we add rest time; if you want long days in the field, we plan early starts and picnic lunches. We also take into account things that matter on the ground, such as the ages of children, any mobility needs and whether you want to combine the safari with a climb or a beach stay.

You can change the plan as often as you need before you book. Once the itinerary is right, we confirm the lodges, flights and transfers, and your guide meets you on arrival in Tanzania. Before you travel you receive a briefing with practical details, from packing and money to what to expect on the first morning. While you are in Tanzania, your guide and our office stay in touch, so small changes along the way, such as a different lunch stop or an extra hour at a sighting, are easy to make.
