Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Land of Elephants and Baobabs

About Tarangire National Park

Celebrated for its massive elephant herds and baobab-dotted landscapes.

Tarangire National Park lies about two hours from Arusha and is known for its ancient baobab trees, rolling hills and the Tarangire River, which draws wildlife in the dry season.

Wildlife

Large elephant herds are the highlight. The park also has lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland, oryx and a rich bird list. Tree-climbing pythons and lions resting in the branches are occasional sights.

Best time to visit

June to October, when animals gather along the river and the grass is short, is the best time for game viewing. The green season from November to May is quieter and good for birdwatching.

Where to stay

Tented lodges and camps lie in and around the park, many with views over the river valley or the plains.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tarangire worth adding to a Serengeti safari?

Yes. It is different country from the Serengeti, with large elephant herds and baobabs, and it is close to Arusha so it needs little extra driving.
