About Arusha
The gateway to the northern safari circuit and Kilimanjaro, at the foot of Mount Meru, with Arusha National Park close by.
Arusha is the main starting point for northern Tanzania safaris and Kilimanjaro climbs. It sits at the foot of Mount Meru, and is a lively town with markets, coffee estates and craft shops.
Most travellers spend a night here before or after the safari, which makes it a good place for the pre-trip briefing and gear check.
Wildlife
Arusha National Park, a short drive from town, has colobus monkeys, giraffe, buffalo, hippo and flamingos on the Momela lakes, plus views of Mount Meru and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro.
Best time to visit
Arusha is pleasant year-round. It is cooler than the coast, with the driest months from June to October.
